The client’s brief for this project asked us to transform their existing alfresco and minimal garden space into a more functional and visually appealing outdoor space. Almost 100% of the existing back garden was under cover and decked, so the clients wanted to achieve a better blend of dining, leisure and garden spaces and utility. This was successfully created by the removal of approximately half of the existing roof structure, allowing for more light access and planting.
A key design feature was the replacement the existing undercover, in-deck spa with an outdoor in-ground pool, enclosed and screened by a water wall. Other features include the built-in BBQ, sawn-basalt paving that transitions between the deck and pool, and a refined plant palette that adds to a ‘resort at home’ ambience. The daybed, built on to the existing deck and cantilevered over the new paved area, further aids a natural transition from the raised entertaining area to the pool. This compact but dynamic landscape not only looks beautiful but also provides for a range of uses, undercover and in the sun.
