The Melbourne beachside town of Brighton may seem a long way from the Californian resort city of Palm Springs, the two find common ground in this reinvented rear garden.
The owners of this Brighton property wanted to feel like they were in a resort every time the set foot in their rear garden, and they were very clear about how they wanted to achieve that. An outdoor room designed for entertaining was a must, as were lush plantings and a relaxed Palm Springs feel.
Armed with this brief, Franklin’s set about the design and renovation of this pool and landscape into a resort style haven. The existing kidney shaped swimming pool was clearly the central feature of the rear garden, so all the new elements had to work in harmony with it. To ensure a seamless transition from old to new, the coping around the pool was updated and a curved poolside entertaining deck created.
The curved decking is a standout feature of the new design. Getting the curves just right was challenging but the result is stunning. The curved walls and in-built seating reference the shape of the pool and the decking and give all the overall landscape a natural feel. The outdoor room gives the owners a place where they can escape to and take in the view across the pool and the lush landscape.
The planting palette is quite simple but achieves the tropical feel and layered effect we wanted. In choosing the plants, we were mindful of the need to soften the hard elements, which we did by picking plants that hang over the walls. The result speaks for itself.
